How kinderopvangtoeslag is calculated
Kinderopvangtoeslag is a government subsidy that covers part of your childcare costs. The percentage you receive depends on your household income — the lower the income, the higher the benefit.
1
Household income determines your percentage
Toeslagen looks at the combined gross annual income of both partners. In 2026 the benefit ranges from 96% (income up to ~€56k) down to 36.5% for the highest earners.
2
Maximum hourly rate caps your subsidy
The government sets a maximum hourly rate per care type. If your provider charges more than this cap, you pay the difference yourself — 100% out of pocket.
3
First child gets the highest rate
The child with the highest childcare cost is treated as your "first child" and receives the most favourable benefit percentage. Additional children get a slightly lower rate.

Know a family navigating childcare costs in the Netherlands?
You are entitled if: (1) you and your partner both work, study, or participate in a re-integration programme, (2) your child is under 12 years old, and (3) your childcare provider is registered in the LRK (Landelijk Register Kinderopvang). You must apply via Toeslagen.nl.
The government caps the hourly rate on which it calculates your benefit. In 2026: KDV/Peuteropvang €11.23, BSO €9.98, Gastouder €8.49. If your provider charges more, you receive benefit only up to the cap — the excess is entirely your own cost.
Yes — in two ways. First, your gross income drops, which may increase your benefit percentage. Second, your childcare hours (and cost) also drop, so the absolute amount of benefit falls too. The net effect is not always obvious — compare scenarios side by side to find your optimum.
Toeslagen designates the child with the highest total childcare cost in a given period as the first child. That child receives the highest benefit percentage. All other children are treated as second (or later) children and receive a slightly lower percentage. This calculator ranks your children automatically by cost per scenario.
IACK (Inkomensafhankelijke combinatiekorting) is a tax credit for working parents with a child under 12. In 2026 the maximum is €3,032/year, phased in between €6,239 and €32,710 gross. Above €32,710 you receive the full maximum. This calculator includes IACK for both you and your partner automatically.
Yes. A common combination is KDV (full days) plus BSO (after school). Each care type has its own maximum hourly rate and hours. In this calculator, click "Add Another Type" within a child card to add a second or third care type — each with its own days-per-week slider in the scenarios.
